Why emergency savings come first

One car repair should not become credit card debt. Savings protect your family from surprises.

Life sends surprises: a car repair, a medical bill, a lost job. Without savings, every surprise becomes debt — and debt makes the next surprise worse. Savings break that cycle.

Start small. The first target is one month of essential bills — just the must-pays: rent, food, utilities, transport, minimum debt payments. For many households that is $2,000 to $4,000.

After that, build toward three to six months of essentials. That number sounds big, so do not stare at it. Stare at the next $500. Automatic transfers on payday, even $50, get you there faster than willpower.

Keep this money in a separate savings account — easy to reach in an emergency, hard to spend on a normal Tuesday. It is not an investment. Its job is to be there.
