Compound growth: your money's engine

Time matters more than timing. See how small, steady amounts grow into something big.

Compound growth means your gains earn gains. Put in $1,000, earn 7%, and you have $1,070. Next year you earn 7% on $1,070, not just on the original $1,000. The curve starts slow, then bends upward.

Time is the ingredient you cannot buy back. $200 a month at 7% for 30 years grows to about $244,000 — you put in $72,000. Wait ten years to start, and the same $200 a month for 20 years reaches only about $104,000. Starting early beats investing more later.

The rule of 72 is a quick mental tool: divide 72 by your yearly growth rate to get the years it takes money to double. At 8%, money doubles in about 9 years.

Growth is never guaranteed — real returns vary and can be negative. But the direction of the math is clear: start now, keep adding, give it time.
