A budget is not a punishment. It is a plan you write before the month begins, so the month does not write itself.
A budget fails when it is built on the life you wish you had instead of the life you actually live. Start with what you really spend, not what a chart says you should spend.
A simple starting frame is 50 / 30 / 20: about half for needs (housing, food, transport, bills), about a third for wants, and about a fifth for savings and extra debt payments. Treat it as a starting point, not a judgment. A family with high rent may be at 60 / 25 / 15 — that is fine. What matters is that every dollar has a job.
Write your plan before the month starts. Give savings its own line, like a bill you owe yourself. Then during the month, you are not deciding anymore — you already decided.
Review at the end of the month. What worked? What surprised you? Adjust next month's plan. A budget you adjust beats a perfect budget you abandon.
